The Cohen Residence . Siesta Key, Florida.
The house was originally designed for living, entertainment, and ensemble concerts. Designed by Paul Rudolph in 1954, the house was renovated in 2005/2006. Renovation requirements included documentation and restoration of the home to its original state by repairing deteriorated structural components, removing unsympathetically added elements, rehabilitating finishes and original furniture, and providing modern conveniences and technologies to accommodate today’s lifestyle.
The work performed included repairs to the original rolling wall panels, renovation of the kitchen and built-in cabinetry, and rehabilitation of the original Rudolph-designed built-in furniture that contributes to making this house an icon. This work was guided by the original drawings obtained from the Library of Congress and photographic prints from the original Ezra Stoller negatives.
Other work includes restoration of the original roof connecting the existing house to the existing carport which had been previously replaced in a manner that was not consistent with the original design. Original colors were determined by removing and analyzing several layers of paint, and these colors were digitally matched. The overhangs and many of the existing columns had deteriorated and were replaced. The screen porch was detailed to be sympathetic to the House’s original details.
