Pavilion House . Lido Shores, Florida

This early 1960’s house, modest in size and materials, was in serious need of improvement due to sagging roof overhands and deteriorating exterior materials.  There had been a previous modification to the original structure to enlarge the living area, but the house was still a small, enclosed box.  The configuration of the existing spaces worked well for the Owners, but there was a desire to increase natural light, spaciousness, and openness to the landscape.

The solution transforms the house into an open pavilion filled with light and includes the addition of a new master suite and garage.  The master bedroom is enclosed with glass on three sides and extends into the rear yard.  Natural light is brought in from clerestory windows to illuminate the dressing and bath areas.  A glass wall in the garage allows a revolving display of vintage Ferraris as automotive artwork.

The existing house was restructured to allow the substantial increase glass and raising of the roof in the living and dining. Glass is positioned at the ends of all circulation paths to maintain the feeling of openness.  Sliding glass doors are used extensively to open the house to the exterior. Where needed, clerestory windows are added for openness and light while maintaining privacy.

Exterior hardscape elements are added to extend the useable space and the view into the landscape.  As the new cypress siding weathers to grey, the exterior of the house will gain a soft elegance and it’s fit into the landscape will be enhanced.
