Amory Chapel . Boca Grande, Florida.
Being one of the original churches at the south end of Boca Grande island for the African American community, this abandoned building was designated as a historic landmark. The Barrier Island Parks Service requested a renovation to the interior of this building. The program called for acoustic solutions and a new look so that the facility could be used for a variety of civic and community functions. Removing the carpeting and refinishing the existing concrete floors set the stage for a simple backdrop for multiple uses. Fabric wrapped acoustic panels were added to help with acoustical issues and new shutters over the existing windows give flexibility without disturbing the character of the chapel’s original windows. The austere quality of the chapel befits its modest beginnings and suits the Parks Service’s request for a flexible facility.
